Most school websites tell you they have a legacy. Ours is specific enough to date, count and check.
In August 1988, four founders — Vijaya Babu A, Subba Rao A, Busavapurnaya V & Rambabu K — opened Nalanda Vidya Niketan in Vijayawada under a motto borrowed from Italian: Il Tutto Pronto. Prepared for all challenges. The school taught with a rhythm that would become the group’s signature: a test every week, results on the notice board, doors open to any parent who walked in.
It worked. Within a decade the junior-college wing alone had grown from a 200-seat start to 34,000 students across 27 locations. By 2004, the group’s classrooms stretched across 55 campuses in 38 towns and cities of Andhra Pradesh, with more than a thousand teachers on the rolls. A generation of Andhra grew up in a Nalanda classroom — and the graduates of those years, an alumni body we are counting register by register, carry it across the world today.
The choice of 2008
Growth of that speed forces a decision: run an empire, or run schools. In 2008, our junior colleges had grown so large they became part of the Narayana group, one of Asia’s largest education networks. We kept the campuses closest to our founding purpose — and went deep instead of wide.
That is why today’s Nalanda is five institutions rather than fifty-five campuses: Nalanda Toddlers, Nalanda Vidya Niketan, Bloomingdale International School, Nalanda Junior College and Nalanda Degree College. Around 14,000 students at a time, 1,200 educators, one standard.
Why this story matters now
In 2027 we plan to take that standard beyond our campuses. Nalanda Online will carry our own teachers and our weekly testing rhythm to any home, live. Plenty of platforms will promise you outcomes. We’d rather show you 38 years of receipts.
